home sweet home

Thanksgiving seems to be the point where my east coast friends and I begin missing seasons, leaves, and crisp air – even if it is already snowing at home. Turkey just tastes better with fog in the air and leaves on the ground.

Some of these were taken with my very first DSLR back in 2006. Thanks to facebook for holding on to them for me. More reliable than some hard drives it seems.

These wordpress galleries have gotten very slick. Click an image to scroll though and behold my homeland, LA take note…

Before you know it I will be craving this…but not yet.

sometimes I miss Boston…

Sometimes, I don’t…

this was  me waiting to go to school every day for years, red line inbound, sigh

try getting anywhere during a red sox game…seriously try it, oh and by the way its 40 below and you have a bolex with you

these are the times you thank steve jobs for ipods, and try not to cry while staring at the ad on the opposite wall saying ‘come visit vermont!’ complete with idyllic lakes and mountains in the background…

charlie’s a dick too and something is very wrong with his mouth

snackology

What perfect timing! As I begin to write this post, a huge basket of Snookie’s Cookies and brownies and a carton of milk were just delivered. I was also sent a ridiculously amazing breakfast burrito from one of our commercial shoots. This was all in a 1 hour span.

hash browns inside…no big deal

This is the theme of the post: food. The sheer amount of food (and I mean good food) in the production business is just astonishing. I love it and I hate it.

If we weren’t in LA everyone would be 500 lbs. Thank god everyone has to follow that daily yoga ordinance.

Sadly we also waste a ton of it and if someone ever started a business where they drove from company to company collecting leftover catering and goodies we would have enough to feed a small nation in Africa…and possibly give them diabetes and heart conditions…but they’d be fed!

Hold on. I am interrupting myself to show you what is happening in our kitchen right now… This is a bit more action than usual…but LOOK:

absurd

I am used to seeing the heaps of food brought in for lunch and meetings because I sit right next to the kitchen and I always thought it was astonishing…then I went to a shoot. On set they bring around trays of goodies every hour. Then they serve amazing meals with tons of variety for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

So. Spoiled. I couldn’t handle it so I tried to take pictures of every snack brought around one day on set. I think I missed about 3 or 4 other ones but take a look below to see the decadence.

This doesn’t include the strawberry lemonade, limeade, or the pre-minted toothbrushes they hand out. I asked the man prepping these tasty treats how he plans his menu and he says he bases it on the crew and what they seem to be drawn towards. Impressive.

well, now I’m hungry and someone just said there’s chinese food…go figure.

life and times

I promised a certain mother of mine whom shall remain nameless (mom) that I would do some more posts with writing. Apparently my images alone are not enough to satiate her appetite for daughter-time.

I thought I’d go with the tried and true method of going through all my iphone photos. This sounds like a cop out but really – what a great thing the camera phone is – I’ll explain my logic…

I was brushing my teeth this morning and recalling some of the more interesting moments in my history of photography class. Welcome to my mind. I remembered learning about the carte de visite and how it became absurdly popular to get little photographs taken so one could hand them out and trade with friends. They were like the pokemon of 1860s.

napoleon made these all the rage

They even had a cute name for it: cardomania! It became a worldwide phenomenon. How could it not? 1st of all, cute little photos (think: polaroids) are adorable and everyone will love them. Always. Secondly it was a way to socially network – see where I’m going with this?

Back to the teeth brushing. I recalled being amused by cardomania and how silly these people seemed trading photos of themselves and celebrities. At the same time I knew I would have totally done it. A lot.

This led me to consider the fact that as cameras (both film and still) became more portable, they became more popular. They were cheaper, lighter, easier to use and the art of photography became generally more accessible.

If you add together the idea of the social aspect of carte de visite and the idea that cameras need to be portable to be used more – you get…the camera phone!

People now have this terribly portable camera that they bring with them everywhere because “I have to have my phone with me! What if something happens?!” and hardwired into this camera is the ability to share your images with anyone in an instant.

Imagine if those folks in France could send their amazing Napolean carte de visite to not only the people in their parlor but to anyone they wanted…it would have been mayhem. Luckily these things take time to evolve.

I keep thinking about history of photography classes of the future and how one day a professor will explain to students hovering in a space-classroom that “digital photography really took off for amateur photographers with the advent of the camera phone. Yes, yes, I know it sounds archaic but before then, people had cameras separate from their computerphonerobots.” The students will then learn about that old thing they called ‘instagram’ that automatically made their photos look “cool” the definition of the word “cool” would follow…

Personally, I like being in the midst of this camera phone era…it changes every single day and it always kind of blows my mind. Not to mention I have TONS of digital cartes de visite now, thanks André Adolphe Eugène Disdéri.

I digress – here are my camera phone photos summing up the past few months in my life. Click for larger, click back to see more, don’t steal my stuff. Thanks!

photo-an-hour

the idea behind this was to document a saturday by taking a photo every hour or so. I set an alarm to remind myself every hour but it slowly turned into photo-every-time-I-change-locations and eventually photo-every-time-I-feel -like-it…

the roof is on fire

If you had to pick the things to grab from your burning house – what would they be? I like to think that all people and pets are safe and that maybe it is just a small fire so you have time to grab things without risking your life. The Burning House explores this idea…

I think I will gather mine and document soon. Most of these people seem to love their cameras, iphones, and computers – from there it really branches out. I enjoy reading the explanations for bringing odd items, especially when it’s something along the ‘what if’ lines…

what if I find a canoe but there’s no paddle…?

Some people are more logical – car keys, passport, wallet… While others seem bizarre to me – toy dinosaur, bear’s head, dog treats… I like that the submissions are from all over the world. Some people have some very old and very cool items.

It seems to be a very specific type of person who chooses to read this site and contribute. I realized I fit almost all the categories… mac user (check), iphone user (check), camera lover (check), ray ban wearer (fake- but check), moleskine addict (check)…but I will find some personal items and prove my individuality! Stay tuned…
