I promised a certain mother of mine whom shall remain nameless (mom) that I would do some more posts with writing. Apparently my images alone are not enough to satiate her appetite for daughter-time.
I thought I’d go with the tried and true method of going through all my iphone photos. This sounds like a cop out but really – what a great thing the camera phone is – I’ll explain my logic…
I was brushing my teeth this morning and recalling some of the more interesting moments in my history of photography class. Welcome to my mind. I remembered learning about the carte de visite and how it became absurdly popular to get little photographs taken so one could hand them out and trade with friends. They were like the pokemon of 1860s.
napoleon made these all the rage
They even had a cute name for it: cardomania! It became a worldwide phenomenon. How could it not? 1st of all, cute little photos (think: polaroids) are adorable and everyone will love them. Always. Secondly it was a way to socially network – see where I’m going with this?
Back to the teeth brushing. I recalled being amused by cardomania and how silly these people seemed trading photos of themselves and celebrities. At the same time I knew I would have totally done it. A lot.
This led me to consider the fact that as cameras (both film and still) became more portable, they became more popular. They were cheaper, lighter, easier to use and the art of photography became generally more accessible.
If you add together the idea of the social aspect of carte de visite and the idea that cameras need to be portable to be used more – you get…the camera phone!
People now have this terribly portable camera that they bring with them everywhere because “I have to have my phone with me! What if something happens?!” and hardwired into this camera is the ability to share your images with anyone in an instant.
Imagine if those folks in France could send their amazing Napolean carte de visite to not only the people in their parlor but to anyone they wanted…it would have been mayhem. Luckily these things take time to evolve.
I keep thinking about history of photography classes of the future and how one day a professor will explain to students hovering in a space-classroom that “digital photography really took off for amateur photographers with the advent of the camera phone. Yes, yes, I know it sounds archaic but before then, people had cameras separate from their computerphonerobots.” The students will then learn about that old thing they called ‘instagram’ that automatically made their photos look “cool” the definition of the word “cool” would follow…
Personally, I like being in the midst of this camera phone era…it changes every single day and it always kind of blows my mind. Not to mention I have TONS of digital cartes de visite now, thanks André Adolphe Eugène Disdéri.
I digress – here are my camera phone photos summing up the past few months in my life. Click for larger, click back to see more, don’t steal my stuff. Thanks!
