My friend Jack and I set off on our little adventure with minimal knowledge about our destination and enough cameras to kill a person. Maybe.

The Salton Sea has a bizarre history which you should learn about here, but then come back to check out the photos and such.

We decided to take the opportunity to photograph some of Jack’s artwork and see more of this bizarre state we are living in. This is Jack’s unicorn rock below. (…which I broke with my ass moments before this photo was taken, but we repaired it in the field)

The sea itself smelled like a mixture of dead fish and very salty water. What appeared to be gravel-sand turned out to be ground up fish bones. Despite the carcasses and the aroma, the view was pretty stunning. It was so bizarre to be equally repulsed by and drawn to the area.

There were so many birds and all I could think about was how they must be poisoned by now…how are they still alive and all the fish are dead? Sonny Bono noticed all the birds too and set up an animal sanctuary before his death. Don’t know if they needed it though since they seem to be perfectly happy at home with the fish carcasses. 

These stupid apple pears Jack brought spent half the trip (when I was driving) on the dash and the other half (while Jack drove) flying around trying to break car windows. 

These moccasins were a bit of a stupid choice. But they look good covered in dust.

We stayed at a very glamorous motel that had color TV’s! They couldn’t decide how may beds to give us. We got 3. 

We made our way to Salvation Mountain. I can’t even explain it. Just look it up. 

I found this polaroid of the guy who made Salvation Mountain just lying on the ground. Apparently it’s from 2 years ago…how and why it was still there was beyond me. Honestly that was least of the weirdness…

We visited the nearby “town” of Slab City. We would have stayed longer and taken more photos but Jack got scared. Psh. 

We also explored another nearby abandoned “suburb” full of strange people roaming the streets like zombies. We didn’t stay long. 

We found these trees and this weird white-dusty-rock-sand-field while driving around. When I instagram’d one shot, a location nearby was listed as ’3 Sisters’ and there were three trees so I decided that was the name of the area. 

Then Jack and I had a bizarre aborigine photo shoot. You know, the usual. 

On our last evening there we took in a lovely sunset while overlooking some gorgeous rocks. Then we headed to civilization and a casino. A weirdly touristy end to the most anti-touristy vacation I have had in a while. 

All in all, California is full of crazy landscapes and even crazier people. Hopefully my next aventure is to Big Sur… I have been dreaming of it for quite some time.

well that was a pretty pathetic post for it taking a month to do, but up next is the salton sea trip! Should be done around mid 2013…

I love love love the look and feel of this place. From the paper mache rhino with a broken horn to the desk-like chairs lined up along the walls – this place is cool.

My brother is in town visiting and we met up with his friend Mallory in Long Beach because it’s halfway between our respective homes. We first went to Alex’s, the bar they use as Fangtasia in ‘True Blood’. (I was very excited)

Their bathroom had some very cool art geared towards the vampire crowd…

Then we got some burgers and tattoos at Famous…

watched some “Dancing With The Stars” with an employee…

All tatt’d up, we headed to Joe Jost’s…

I definitely want to do a “real” shoot here some time. It is where they shot The Bodyguard by the way…so, kind of have to.

Some of these were taken with my very first DSLR back in 2006. Thanks to facebook for holding on to them for me. More reliable than some hard drives it seems.

These wordpress galleries have gotten very slick. Click an image to scroll though and behold my homeland, LA take note…

Before you know it I will be craving this…but not yet.
